Fiber Waterproof Coating: How It Works

A fiber waterproof coating is a liquid-applied elastic membrane with millions of micro-fibres mixed into the coating itself. The fibres work like reinforcement mesh in concrete: they carry stress across hairline cracks that open and close daily, so the membrane bridges movement that would tear a plain coating. Applied as a 1.9 kg/m² three-coat system, it waterproofs concrete, metal, asbestos and tiled roofs without hot works or sheet welding.

The problem it solves: roofs in Malaysia never stop moving

A Malaysian roof surface can swing through a large temperature range in a single day — baking from mid-morning, then hit by a thunderstorm at 4pm. Concrete, metal and mortar all expand and contract with that cycle, and they do it every day of the year. The result is the defining failure mode of flat roofs here: hairline cracks that are alive. They open in the afternoon heat, close in the rain, and slowly grow.

Rigid waterproofing (cement-based slurries) cracks with the substrate. Plain elastic coatings survive longer — until the daily flexing at one crack line exceeds the film's tensile strength, at which point the membrane splits exactly where the crack is, and the roof leaks again along the same line. Any coating that cannot handle live cracks is only a delay, not a repair.

How micro-fibre reinforcement works

A fibre-reinforced coating attacks that failure mode mechanically, not chemically. Short synthetic micro-fibres are dispersed through the liquid so that the cured film is a composite: an elastic matrix carrying a random mesh of fibres, the same engineering idea as fibre-mesh concrete or glass-fibre reinforced plastic.

This is why the fibre tier exists across the industry as a step above plain elastomeric paint — and why it is the right specification for the concrete decks, parapet joints and upstands where movement is concentrated.

The three-coat system, by the numbers

Fibre coatings are systems, not paints. The specified A-Class system totals 1.9 kg/m²:

  1. Primer coat — 0.4 kg/m², the coating diluted 10% with water so it penetrates and binds the surface instead of sitting on top of it.
  2. First top coat — 0.75 kg/m², applied full strength once the primer is dry.
  3. Second top coat — 0.75 kg/m², applied at right angles to the first (cross-coating), so roller gaps in one pass are covered by the next.

The honest summary: for the refurbishment of an existing Malaysian flat roof that is cracking and leaking, the fibre-reinforced liquid tier is usually the best fit of cost, safety (no hot works) and crack tolerance. Application practice that decides the outcome

  1. Preparation is most of the job. Wash off dirt, moss and chalking residue; scrape loose old coating; repair cracks wider than 2 mm with cement filler. A membrane is only as good as what it grips.
  2. Dry substrate, dry window. Apply after 2–3 dry days, in the morning, so each coat skins before the afternoon rain risk. Malaysia's reliable dry window is roughly February to September — schedule recoating works before the year-end monsoon.
  3. Respect the primer. The diluted first coat is what bonds the system to the roof. Skipping it to save material is the most common cause of sheet-peeling failures.
  4. Cross-coat. Second top coat at right angles to the first — roller gaps never line up.
  5. Detail the weak points first. Parapet joints, upstands, drain mouths and screw lines get a stripe coat before the field coats, so the highest-movement zones carry the thickest film.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a fibre waterproof coating last?

Service life depends on surface preparation, film thickness and how much standing water the roof sees. A full three-coat system on a properly prepared, well-drained surface is a multi-year membrane; the usual failure causes are shortcuts — a skipped primer coat, coating over dust or chalking paint, or persistent ponding that no coating is designed to sit under. Inspect annually and recoat when the surface starts to chalk or blister, before it leaks.

Can it be applied over an old coating?

Only if the old coating is still firmly bonded. Loose, flaking or blistered areas must be scraped back to a sound surface, and chalky residue washed off, or the new membrane bonds to the failure layer instead of the roof. On mostly-sound old acrylic, spot-repair then recoat the whole area is standard practice.

Does it work on metal and asbestos roofs?

Yes — the A-Class Fiber King 500 system is specified for metal roofs, asbestos sheets, roof tiles, concrete and cement mortar. Two cautions: rust must be treated before coating (a membrane over active rust lifts off with it), and brittle asbestos sheets should not be walked on directly — coating extends the life of intact sheets but does not restore broken ones.

Is it hazardous to handle or transport?

The published safety data sheet records a water-based emulsion with a mild odour, pH 7–9, no flash point, and no dangerous-goods classification for road, sea or air transport — so it ships as normal cargo and cleans up with water while wet. What area does a 20kg pail cover?

The full system uses 1.9 kg/m² — a primer coat at 0.4 kg/m² (diluted 10% with water) plus two top coats at 0.75 kg/m² each. A 20kg pail therefore covers roughly 10.5 m², a 5kg pail about 2.6 m², and a 1kg tin about 0.5 m² of completed system.

What is the actual difference between fibre and plain acrylic coating?

Both are elastic liquid membranes. The difference is tensile: plain acrylic stretches until local stress at a moving crack exceeds its strength, then tears at exactly that line. Micro-fibres distribute that stress along their length — the same principle as fibre-mesh reinforcement in concrete — so the membrane bridges hairline cracks that keep moving daily instead of splitting over them.
